Waxed cotton is the oldest weatherproofing that still works. It marks, it creases, and it keeps the rain out for decades.
Tightly woven cotton duck saturated with paraffin or beeswax. The wax seals the weave against water and wind, then wears back at the elbows and cuffs into a patina no coating can imitate. Re-wax it every few years and the jacket outlives the closet.
The RJ-1 is the wax canvas jacket we sell most of in Los Angeles — heavy waxed cotton, lined, cut close enough to wear in town and long enough to be useful outside it.
Wax canvas came out of fishing decks and field coats. The mountain jackets, cruisers, and chore coats we carry keep those pockets and proportions because they were solved a long time ago.
