Fox River Mills was founded in Osage, Iowa in 1900. In 1992, Fox River purchased the Nelson Knitting Company which had been founded in Rockford, Illinois in 1880. With this purchase, they acquired the trademark and patterns for Rockford Red Heel socks which had been introduced in 1932. Rockford Red Heels are the socks traditionally used to make sock monkeys.
